Divine Reiki Sadhana

The word Reiki is a Japanese word derived from two roots: ‘rei’ and ‘ki’. ‘Rei’ means ‘universal’ while ‘ki’ means ‘life force energy’. Thus, Reiki ‘universal life force energy’.
Also referred to variously as ‘pran-shakti’ in Indian Yogic literature, ‘chi’ in Chinese, ‘orgone’ in the West, ‘bio-plasma’ or ‘universal energy field’ by physicists carrying research on the subject, it is also known as ‘touch therapy’ as it involves healing a person by holding hands close to his/her body.

Underlying Concept in Reiki :

is that the entire universe is pervaded by this universal energy and is but a manifestation of it. That is, all matter, whether animate or inanimate, is made of this energy. When one becomes a channel of this energy, through a special attunement process in which one’s energy centers are activated by spiritual master or ‘guru’, one can tap into this infinite source of energy. The energy or Reiki is intelligent, self-regulating and, being formless or ‘nirakar’ form, the divine light, the spiritual vibration of creation, the prana-Shakti, is endowed with the capacity to rejuvenate anything. It has miraculous effects in curing both chronic and acute diseases and helps humans in all fields of their lives- spiritual, emotional, intellectual, familial, in career or business alike. In fact, it elevates one’s life as a whole, making no distinction between various man-made compartments of life. Thus, healing through Divine Reiki is healing the whole life environment including all aspects of life – physical/mental health, emotional world, family relationship, livelihood of the person and all others. A Reiki channel (Reiki Sadhak) can draw the energy and use it for healing himself as well as others. Since everything is made of energy itself, even inanimate objects can be treated with Reiki.

Basis of Reiki in Indian Tradition :

It was called ‘prana-vidya’ in Indian tradition. Prana was referred to as Brahma in Kaushitaki Brahmanopanishad and scores of commentaries have been written on it by many sages, rishis and Yogis. The widely revered Gayatri Mantra in India begins by calling the Omnipotent as ‘prana-svaroop’ or ‘embodiment of prana’. One of the most important Gods in India is Lord Shiva who always appears along with His counterpart, Maa Parvati or Shakti. The holy pair of Shiva and Shakti is what is referred to ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’ by the Japanese. Thus, ‘prana- vidya’ or the study of prana was a practice that was used and perfected by many Yogis over a period of time on the path to salvation.

Other references to Reiki :

Though the word ‘Reiki’ sounds new, there are numerous references to spiritually highly evolved persons of all ages and all religions practicing this ‘touch healing’. Lord Buddha himself used this power for the benefit of the deprived so widely that in His age, the technique was called as ‘ Buddha Aushadhi’. Lord Jesus too used it widely. In modern times, the Great Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda and his Great Guru Shri Ramakrishna Parmahansa is also known to have used it. The earliest references to this universal life force energy or ‘prana- shakti’, as it is called in Indian spiritual science of ‘Yoga’, goes back to a great saint or ‘rishi’, Shri Vasishtha Muni, who was the ‘guru’ of Lord Rama.
